1080×1080 is the standard square format for Instagram posts, Facebook posts, WhatsApp profile photos, and YouTube channel icons. Getting exactly this size matters — platforms crop or scale non-square images automatically, and the algorithm result is rarely what you intended. This guide gets you to exactly 1080×1080 in under a minute, whether your original is landscape, portrait, or already square.

Step-by-Step Guide

5 steps · takes under 1 minute

1

Open the Image Resizer

Go to the Resize tool — it runs entirely in your browser with no upload required. Works on all modern browsers on desktop and mobile.

2

Upload your image

Drop your photo onto the upload zone or click to browse. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and SVG are all accepted.

3

Click the 'Instagram Post' preset

The 1080×1080 preset is available in the social media presets panel. Clicking it sets width and height to exactly 1080×1080 and disables aspect ratio lock so both dimensions are applied independently.

4

Or enter 1080 × 1080 manually

If using custom dimensions: turn off 'Maintain aspect ratio', then set Width to 1080 and Height to 1080. Both fields are applied independently when aspect ratio lock is off.

5

Resize and download

Click 'Resize Image'. The tool renders your image at exactly 1080×1080. Download the result — it's ready to upload directly to Instagram, Facebook, or any platform requiring square images.

🔒

100% Private — Zero Uploads

ImgToolkit runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images are never sent to a server, never stored in the cloud, and never seen by anyone else. This makes it safe for sensitive documents, client work, medical imagery, and confidential screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions

4 questions answered

Why does Instagram crop my image after uploading even though it's 1080×1080?

Instagram displays images at 1080×1080 in the feed but stores and serves them at various resolutions. If the image looks cropped in the app preview before posting, check that the post type is set to 'Square' in the Instagram crop screen — drag to reframe, or set to square before uploading. The 1080×1080 file itself is correct.

What if my original photo isn't square?

Resizing a non-square photo to 1080×1080 will stretch it. To avoid stretching: crop the image to a square first using the Crop tool, then resize to 1080×1080. Or use the resize tool with aspect ratio lock off and accept the distortion — though cropping is usually better for photos.

Should I resize to 1080×1080 or let Instagram handle the resizing?

Always resize before uploading. When Instagram resizes your image, it applies its own compression algorithm on top. Pre-resizing to 1080×1080 and compressing to 80% JPG quality before upload gives you control over the final appearance and avoids double-compression.

What's the maximum resolution for Instagram posts?

Instagram accepts images up to 1080px wide. For square posts, 1080×1080 is the ideal resolution. Larger images (e.g. 2160×2160) are accepted but downscaled to 1080 by Instagram. Uploading at exactly 1080×1080 avoids the platform's scaling and gives the sharpest result.
