Step-by-Step Guide

5 steps · takes under 1 minute

1

Choose a square source image

WhatsApp displays DPs as circles. If your photo isn't square, the circular crop will cut off top and bottom (or left and right). Use the Crop tool to crop your photo to a 1:1 square with the face or subject centred.

2

Open the Image Resizer

Go to the Resize tool — browser-based, no upload required.

3

Turn off aspect ratio lock and set 500×500

Since you've already cropped to square, both dimensions should be equal. Enter 500×500 (or leave at the cropped square size if it's larger — WhatsApp can handle up to 5MB).

4

Keep the subject centred

WhatsApp applies its circular mask centred on the image. Ensure your face or logo is in the centre of the square — content in the corners will be cut off by the circular mask.

5

Upload to WhatsApp

In WhatsApp: Settings (or your profile) → Profile photo → Camera or Gallery → select your 500×500 image → adjust the circular crop if needed → save.

Frequently Asked Questions

4 questions answered

What size should a WhatsApp profile picture be?

WhatsApp displays profile photos as circles, sized at approximately 200×200px in chats and larger in profile views. Upload at 500×500px minimum for sharp display on retina and high-DPI screens. WhatsApp accepts square images up to 5MB in JPG or PNG format.

Why does my WhatsApp DP look blurry?

WhatsApp compresses uploaded photos, especially on Android. To minimise compression: upload at exactly 500×500px or 640×640px (a common WhatsApp-optimised size), use JPG at 90% quality, and ensure the photo is well-lit with good contrast. WhatsApp compresses more aggressively on lower image quality uploads.

Can I use a non-square photo as a WhatsApp DP?

Yes — you can upload a non-square photo. WhatsApp will show you a circular crop guide and let you drag to position the crop. However, for full control over what's visible in the circle, crop to a square first with the subject centred, then upload.

What is the maximum WhatsApp profile picture size?

WhatsApp accepts profile photos up to 5MB. In practice, a 640×640 JPG at 90% quality is typically 60–120KB — tiny compared to the 5MB limit. Uploading at exactly 500–640px square gives you the best quality-to-size ratio with no risk of WhatsApp scaling it down.
