💡

Pro tip

Always keep your original file before converting. Lossy formats like JPG discard data permanently — you can't restore quality that was compressed away.

Frequently Asked Questions

4 questions answered

Does this convert animated GIFs?

The tool converts the first frame of animated GIFs to a static JPG. Converting an animated GIF to a playable video or a different animation format is not supported — that requires video editing tools.

Why does the JPG look better than the GIF?

GIF is limited to 256 colors, which causes visible banding (color stepping) on photographs and gradients. JPG supports 16 million colors, so the converted JPG can represent smooth gradients and photo-realistic color that the GIF could not.

Can I convert a GIF to PNG instead?

Yes — use the Convert to JPG tool and select PNG as the output format. PNG preserves all colors losslessly and also supports transparency, making it a good choice for GIFs that have transparent areas.

What about GIFs with transparent backgrounds?

JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent pixels in your GIF will become white in the JPG output. If you need to preserve transparency, convert to PNG instead.
