Best Image Format for Transparency — PNG, WebP, or GIF?

Not all image formats support transparency — JPG, for instance, has no alpha channel at all. Among formats that do support transparency, PNG, WebP, and GIF each have different characteristics. PNG is the safe universal choice. WebP gives you smaller files with full alpha support. GIF supports binary transparency (on or off, no semi-transparency). This guide tells you exactly which to use for each situation.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Logos and icons → PNG-24 or WebP

Logos need smooth edges with full alpha channel support (semi-transparent pixels for anti-aliasing). Use PNG-24 for universal compatibility. Use WebP where file size matters — it supports full alpha at 30% smaller file size.

2

Product cutouts for e-commerce → PNG

Remove the background, then save as PNG. PNG's lossless compression preserves the perfectly sharp edges needed for product photography. After editing is complete, convert to WebP for web delivery.

3

UI overlays and interface elements → PNG or WebP

Buttons, badges, and UI components with rounded corners need smooth transparency. PNG or WebP are both correct. If the image is part of a web UI, use WebP for smaller file size.

4

Animated graphics with transparency → WebP (animated)

GIF supports animation but only binary transparency (no soft edges). Animated WebP supports full alpha channel transparency with smooth edges and far better colour reproduction. Use animated WebP wherever possible.

5

Legacy systems and email → PNG only

Email clients, older software, and some platforms (Amazon product images require JPG) have limited format support. For maximum compatibility, PNG is the safe default for any image that requires transparency.

Pro tip

Use 75–85% quality for web images — you get 60–80% smaller files with no visible difference at normal screen sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

4 questions answered

Does JPG support transparency?

No. JPG has no alpha channel and cannot store transparency in any form. Transparent areas in a JPG are always replaced with a solid colour (usually white). If you need transparency, use PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG, or AVIF.

What's the difference between PNG-8 and PNG-24 transparency?

PNG-8 supports only binary (on/off) transparency using a colour index — one colour in the palette is designated transparent. PNG-24 supports full alpha channel (0–255 transparency values), enabling smooth semi-transparent edges and anti-aliasing. For logos and graphics requiring smooth edges, always use PNG-24.

Is WebP better than PNG for transparent images?

For web delivery, yes. WebP with alpha channel typically achieves 26% smaller file sizes than PNG at equivalent quality. Both support full semi-transparency (256 levels of alpha). PNG is still better for: editing workflows (lossless), print, and software that doesn't support WebP.

Does GIF support semi-transparency?

No. GIF only supports binary transparency — each pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. This causes hard, jagged edges on curved shapes (the 'halo effect'). For any image requiring smooth transparent edges, use PNG-24 or WebP instead of GIF.
