Pro tip

Always keep your original file before converting. Lossy formats like JPG discard data permanently — you can't restore quality that was compressed away.

Frequently Asked Questions

5 questions answered

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

Not exactly. JPG is lossy — once quality is lost during JPG compression, it cannot be recovered by converting to PNG. What PNG does is prevent any further quality loss. Saving a JPG as PNG locks in its current quality with no additional compression.

Why is the PNG file larger than the original JPG?

PNG is a lossless format that stores every pixel without compression loss. JPG achieves smaller file sizes through lossy compression that discards some image data. A PNG of the same image is always larger than the equivalent JPG — typically 3–5× larger for photos.

Does the PNG output support transparency?

If you're converting a JPG, the output PNG will be a flat image with no transparency — because JPGs don't store any transparent data to preserve. If you convert a WebP or GIF that has transparency, the PNG output will preserve those transparent areas.

Can I convert WebP, GIF, or BMP to PNG too?

Yes. Despite being called JPG to PNG, the tool accepts JPG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and AVIF as inputs and converts all of them to PNG.

When should I use PNG instead of JPG?

Use PNG when: (1) you need transparency or an alpha channel, (2) the image contains text, logos, or sharp-edged graphics where JPG compression artifacts would be visible, (3) you plan to edit the image further and don't want quality loss to accumulate. Use JPG for photos where file size matters more than perfect lossless quality.
